“Windows into heaven”

icon of St. Luke from Monastery Icons“Windows into heaven” – For millenia Christians have used these words to describe icons, the classic form of Christian art which can be traced back to Saint Luke the Evangelist, the first iconographer. Icons of the Holy Virgin Mary painted by Saint Luke still exist today, and his artistic efforts won the approval of the Blessed Mother herself, who said: “May the grace of Him Who was born of me, through me, be imparted to these icons.”

What is an Icon?

An icon is a holy reminder of Christ, the Blessed Virgin, and the Saints — but also something much, much more. It is a channel of divine grace, opened to whoever approaches it prayerfully and receptively. Because of this, icons have been central to Christian worship and devotion since the beginning of Christianity. For example, the great Father of the Church St. John Chrysostom used to keep an icon of Saint Paul by him whenever he studied the Apostle’s Epistles, seeking inspiration and invoking the Apostle’s blessing.

Iconography was kept alive through the centuries chiefly by holy monks who preserved this spiritual and artistic tradition. And it remains alive today in the Monastery Icons collection offered by Sacred Arts Foundation.
